The Highest Mountain in Australia

Driving through the national park on the night of my arrival. Stopping to catch the sunset.

A kangaroo? Or a wallaby? I can’t tell the difference.

Koscioszko Forest

One down. Six to go. I’ve successfully summitted one of the seven highest summits on each continent – granted, this is by far the easiest one of them all. Mt. Kosioszko at 2228 meters. Next would likely be Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which is a 7-9 day trip. Koscioszko however is less than a day, and could be even shorter if you decided to take the chairlift to the top of the ski area.

It was a long drive from Melbourne to Thredbo and it took some getting used to driving on the left side of the road. I drove the last part on a windy dark road. It was very cold the first night and I was unable to successfully sent up my new tent in the dark so on night one I slept in the car.

I got a good day to climb the peak on February 2nd. After hiking to the top of the chairlift, things flatten out and I walked along a grated metal pathway to nearly the top. The clouds in the afternoon did not turn to rain.

I was able to set up the tent on the second night and went to sleep to the sound of the cockatoo. I’ve never heard this bird except in movies. Kinda scary at first. I saw kangaroos in the morning.
